University teachers to retire at 65

Jatiya Sangsad on Sunday passed the Public University Teachers (retirement) (special provisions) Bill, 2012 in an amended form raising retirement age of the teachers of all public universities to 65 years.

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid piloted the bill in the House, which was later passed in voice votes. Independent lawmaker Fazlul Azim brought some amendments to the bill but all of his amendments were rejected by the House.

Earlier, the education minister placed the bill in the Jatiya Sangsad on June 6 proposing to raise the retirement age of all public university teachers to 65 years.

Placing the bill, the minister informed the House that the existing retirement age of Dhaka, Chittagong, Rajshahi and Jahangirnagar universities is 65 years while the same in all other public universities, including Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) is 60.

"Under this prevailing situation, it has been necessitated to raise the retirement age of the teachers of other public universities to ensure uniformity in the matter in all 33 public universities," he added.

The bill says whatever remains in any other existing laws, ordinances, president's orders and rules and regulations of the concerned universities, a teacher of a public university will retire from his job at the end of 65 years of age.

The bill proposed inclusion of a provision aimed at changing the schedule through a gazette notification by the government.

According to the bill, the public universities mentioned in the schedule are: Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet), Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Dhaka University, Rajshahi University, Chittagong University, Jahangirnagar University, Islamic University, Shahjalal Science and Technology University, Khulna University, National

University, Bangladesh Open University, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agriculture University, Hazi Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University, Maulana Bhasani Science and Technology University, Patuakhali Science and Technology University, Noakhali Science and Technology University, Pabna Science and Technology University, Jessore Science and Technology University, Sher-e- Bangla Agriculture University, Chittagong Engineering and Technology University, Rajshahi Engineering and Technology University, Khulna Engineering and Technology University, Jagannath University, Comilla University, Jatiya Kobi Kazi Nazrul University, Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Sylhet Agricultural University, Begum Rokeya University, Bangladesh University of Professionals, Barisal University and Bangladesh Textiles University.
