Prof. Dr. Joseph T O’Connell, visiting Professor of Department of World
Religions & Culture, University of Dhaka passed away due to massive
brain hemorrhage in New York on Saturday. He was 72.
Joseph, also Professor Emeritus, Department of Religions Studies, Toronto University, Canada left behind his wife, one daughter, two sons and many admirers to mourn his death.
He had been working as a visiting professor at the Department of World Religions and Culture since 2001 and he had immense contribution in academic development of this department and DU as a whole, said a press release.
He did his Ph.D on Bengal Vaishnavism in Harvard University, USA and had been teaching this tradition for a long time. He was a famous scholar on South Asian culture and religion.
In a condolence message, DU Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. AAMS Arefin Siddique expressed his deep shock at the death of Prof. Joseph.
He conveyed his deep sympathy to the bereaved family members and prayed for the salvation of the departed soul.
