The govt. owned Bangladesh Marine
Academy (BMA) bears 5 decades long reputation of producing professionally
skilled, environmentally aware, prudent and polite marine cadet. It grooms the
young cadets as required by the IMO STCW convention.
Total 275 students will be able to get admitted in the academy under 3 years courses. 20 female students will get the opportunity to get admitted among them.
The educational qualification of applicants are - SSC/equivalent (science) & HSC/equivalent (science); minimum GPA 3.5 in both SSC & HSC, minimum GPA 3.5 in both physics & mathematics in HSC and minimum GPA 3.0 in English in HSC or IELTS Score 5.5.
Good physique and health is an important factor, also height of male should be 5' 4" & for female 5' 2" , weight corresponding BML, Eyesight Nautical 6/6 and engineering 6/18 with normal color vision.
The age limit has to be Max 21 years on 31 December 2012. The date of birth is recognized as per SSC or equivalent examination certificate. Affidavit not accepted. Any candidate found to be over even by one day shall be rejected and no appeal against it shall be entertained.
Swimming is must & marital status has to be unmarried.
For application, first enter into the website of either Sonali bank www.sonalibank.com.bd or the academy www.macademy.gov.bd . Fill up the academy online registration form and print the e-Token. Submit the printed e-Token, 1 copy passport size photo and Tk 1000 & bank fee Tk 60 to a nearby Sonali bank's branch with RMS + facility. Bank officer will then issue an admit card. In case of any difficulty you can contact with education office of the academy (phone - 031-2514151-6).
For A level students qualified candidates (up to 2nd semester) must have minimum grade C in Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics in A level and minimum grade C in 5 Subjects including Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English in O level.
Candidates will take part in the written examination in specific centers on 21 September, 2012. The examination will be held with 50 questions per subject i.e. 200 MCQ questions in 2 hours. Candidates will have to bring both the admit cards of HSC exam and the academy written test.
There will be 4 centers in Dhaka, 2 in Chittagong, 1 in Rajshahi and 1 in Khulna, total 8 centers. The seat plan of all centers will be published on 16 September, 2012 in the academy website.
During the 2 years course at academy a cadet will require to pay about Tk. 4, 10, 000 for his education, fooding, lodging, uniform etc.
One can embark upon higher courses at local/foreign universities after obtaining the bachelor of maritime science degree. During one year practical on-board training at sea a cadet gets monthly salary of US$ 400/600 (BDT 30,000-50,000). Remarkably after becoming captain/chief engineer within 7-8 years, one gets monthly salary of 10-20 thousand US Dollars (BDT 8, 20, 000-16, 40, 000).
Commencing from the Pre-Sea certificate after obtaining highest sea going certificate, besides ships job, one can get jobs in various areas in maritime sector including ports, ship management, off-shore rigs, power plants, shipbuilding industries, oil companies etc.
