Students of Green University visited Ghorashal Power Station

The final year students of the program of B.Sc. in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) of Green University of Bangladesh took part in a day-long study tour to the Ghorashal Thermal Power Station on 15 June 2015. The prime objective of this tour was to help the students to know about power plant and its operational, maintenance and management. Twenty five (25) students including four (4) female students led by Prof. Dr. Engr. Muhibul Haque Bhuyan, Chairperson of EEE Department participated in the tour. Besides, two (2) other faculty members of the EEE Department, Engr. Robiul Hossain Md. Raffi, Lecturer and Engr. Md. Badruddoja Majumder, Lecturer also joined with the participating students. They guided the students during the day-long study tour.

Ghorashal Thermal Power Station is the biggest power plant in Bangladesh located at Polash, Narshingdi with installed generation capacity of 950 MW. It has 6 power generating units with power generation capacity ranging from 55 MW to 210 MW per unit. All the generators are run by steam turbines. The tour comprised three parts. At first, the students went to observe the power generation units where the Engineers of the power station briefly explained the working principle of the thermal power station and then demonstrated its operation. One unit of the generator was out of order right now. So, both generator and turbines were open and students were able to observe all the opened parts and have huge practical idea about various parts of alternator and steam turbine. After that they visited the electrical control room and then they observed the mechanical control room and boiler section. At last, they observed the sub-station.

At electrical control room, the students observed many control panels, such as, control panels for 230 kV, 132 kV, 33 kV and 11 kV bus bars, switch gears, isolator control knobs, breaker operation knob, ammeter, voltmeter, frequency meter, power factor meter etc. The sub-station can be controlled properly from the control room. Then the students went to the mechanical control room where they observed how the mechanical parameters like boiler’s flow rate, steam flow to the turbine, flame etc. is controlled. Then they observed the boiler, water treatment plant, steam turbines, governor, cooling system, economizer, super-heater, re-heater and other mechanical components of the power plant.

At last, the students observed the sub-station that is consist of several electrical equipment like power, auxiliary transformers and distribution transformers, protection devices like isolators, circuit breakers, HV cables, PTs, CTs, earthing and lightning arresters. The generation voltage is around 11-15 kV, which is converted to 132 kV or 230 kV for transmission. In sub-station, there are parallel bus bar systems available. In this sub-station, three types of breakers, such as, vacuum, SF6 and air circuit breakers, are available. At the end of the day, students came back to Dhaka with practical experiences of power plant through this study tour. This was a very effective tour for both teachers and students. Their theoretical knowledge is supplemented with this study tour.

Shahrukh Khan gets cosy with Katrina Kaif

Any misgivings regarding a possible tepid chemistry between Shahrukh Khan and Katrina Kaif can be laid to rest. The duo look sizzling HOT together.

The first trailer of Yash Chopra’s film Jab Tak Hai Jaan has got a maddening response from film buffs. There are no dialogues in the trailer and the whole drama plays out against a beautiful, touching poem recited by none other than the King Khan.

Critics verdict: Kareena's Heroine is highly predictable

Heroine is drably monotonous, its insights are shallow, most of the characters are caricatures and the lines that they speak border on the corny. Kareena Kapoor is a complete stunner in the movie. She steals the show by delivering a stupendous performance, feel critics.

Barfi! sparks debate about the portrayal of the differently abled in films

Anurag Basu's latest film Barfi!, starring Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra in lead roles, is being touted as one that can change Bollywood's perception about the abilities of the disabled. Mainstream Bollywood cinema has always found it tough to seamlessly integrate the differently abled into its plotline.

The physically and mentally challenged have been portrayed as characters that deserve to be either pitied or mocked, but hardly ever simply accepted. Films that were largely successful in integrating this section of the population with the 'normal' one were immediately tagged as arthouse cinema. But with filmmakers and actors looking to challenge themselves, the arclights have now begun to shine on the differently abled.

Barfi! tells the story of the bond between a deaf and mute hero (Ranbir) and an autistic heroine (Priyanka). When he decided to make the film, Basu was sure that he didn't want to sentimentalise the hero. "If you spend time with differently abled people, you will get over the notion that they're unhappy, suffering souls. Please don't pity them. They find happiness in the smallest of things. They celebrate life constantly. It takes normal people much longer to be happy. For me, it was a given from the start: they (the characters) had to be happy."

Barfi! is only the latest in a growing list of Bollywood films that are trying to look at characters with physical disabilities from a different perspective. Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Guzaarish, Black and Khamoshi, Karan Johar and Shah Rukh Khan's My Name Is Khan, Aamir Khan's Taare Zameen Par (TZP), Anupam Kher's Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara and Mani Ratnam's Guru are just a few of the more recent ones that took the stand that the disabled are actually differently abled.

Facebook faces £80k privacy fine

Facebook could be fined up to €100,000 (£80,000) if it does not comply with the orders of Irish regulators within four weeks.

The social media site was warned last year to make widespread changes by the office of the Irish data protection commissioner (DPC), which included tightening its privacy practices and deleting unneeded data sooner.

The DPC carried out an audit on Facebook Ireland (FB-I) as the international headquarters is responsible for millions of users outside the US and Canada.

The internet giant – which went public on the stock market in May – still has to comply with several recommendations in relation to targeted advertising utilising sensitive data, the retention of data on inactive or deactivated accounts, and educating users over settings.

Commissioner Billy Hawkes confirmed that the maximum penalty was a €100,000 court fine if enforcement action had to be taken.

But he stressed he was satisfied the internet giant had made clear commitments to comply with its data protection responsibilities in line with Irish and EU laws.

Samsung Galaxy S4 landing at in Feb!

Samsung Galaxy S3 now four months old, rumours have already started to do the rounds about a sequel to the South Korean phone-maker’s flagship Android kit.

Citing unnamed supply chain sources, as well as what we’re guessing are some better informed sorts within Samsung, the Korea Times claims that the phone will land in February at the Mobile World Congress.

The handset is apparently set to hit retailers shortly after in March – just nine months after the release of its predecessor.

In news that’s unlikely to surprise anyone on nodding terms with prevailing trends in smartphone upgrades, Samsung’s new kit will purportedly pack a larger five-inch OLED screen – up from the S3’s 4.8-inches - and international 4G LTE support.

An unnamed deepthroat said: “Samsung wants to keep its one-year product schedule and the Galaxy S4 will be the first to match that strategy.

News of Samsung’s plans comes as it recently announced that the S3 has now sold some 20 million units, making it the company’s fastest-selling phone ever.

“The S4 will see some external changes but retain its popular rectangular shape with rounded corner concept.”

iPhone 5 draws big crowds worldwide

Apple fans queued in Asia, Europe and North America on Friday for the new iPhone 5, which appeared set to break sales records despite lukewarm reviews and complaints about its mapping system.

The lines of thousands of eager buyers outside Apple stores looked set to make the latest iPhone a huge commercial success for the trend-setting US tech giant. Some analysts say Apple may sell 10 million in just the first days of the launch.

"I`ve been waiting for eight days, I`m so happy right now," said Keenen Thompson, one of the first among several hundred people outside the Apple store on New York`s Fifth Avenue.

The first in line at Montreal`s Apple store was Jonathan Moreau, 28, who said he would replace his iPhone 4s "which I don`t use for work, but just for me." The new model, he said, "is faster, with a better display, a better camera."

At the Apple store in Bethesda, Maryland, Kirsten Mentzer, a university student who came with her sister and parents to get the new gadget, secured the first spot.

"It`s fun to spend time with other Apple friends," she said. "I`ve always been part of the Apple community. My parents raised me on an old MacBook."

Mike Bishop of Bethesda said he was "really excited" about the new iPhone and had been waiting to replace his broken iPhone 4.

Asked if he would consider another phone, Bishop said: "Once you use an iPhone, you don`t go back to any other brand. The main thing is the refinement at every level." Australians were the first to get their hands on the device.
