The Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) was established in 1993.
- It established a second campus at Chittagong in 1999 and is the first private university, in Bangladesh to extend its teaching facilities to the port city of the country.
- The University logo represents the philosophy on which the University is founded: the best of both worlds. The Blue Leaf represents the western tradition, Saffron Leaf the eastern. The Flame in the middle represents the synthesis of the eastern and western traditions and also conveys the idea of purity.
- The motto of the University "Teacheth Man That Which He knew Not" is taken from the fifth verse of Sura Alak of the Holy Quran.
- The University has 4 schools (School of Business, School of Engineering & Computer Science, School of Environmental Science & Management and School of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences) offering 4-year undergraduate programmes in Business Studies, Economics, Engineering, Computer Science, English Literature, Media & Communication, Anthropology and Environmental Science & Management. IUB also offers 15 graduate programmes at the master’s level in Business Administration, Computer Science, Telecommunication Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Networks and Communications, Public Health, Development Studies, and Environmental Science and Management.
- IUB employs a total of 180 full time and 76 adjunct faculty. Out of the full time faculty, approximately 44 have Ph.D. degrees from North America and Europe.
- IUB currently has more than 4000 undergraduate and graduate students.
- The first convocation in 1997 witnessed graduation of just 29 graduates and today IUB has more than 2900 alumni.
- IUB is the only private university in Bangladesh offering three 2+2 programs in collaboration with Southern Illinois University, Carbondale (SIUC), USA , University of South Australia (UniSA), Australia, Griffith College, Dublin (GCD), Ireland. Under these programs a student can complete 2 years of BBA/ Media Communication program at IUB and then get a transfer to the respective partner university and complete the remaining two years over there.
- IUB has established collaborative arrangements in research, faculty and student exchange and curriculum development with a number of foreign universities and institutions including Harvard University in Cambridge Massachusetts, McMaster University in Canada, Brown University in Providence Rhode Island, the University of Colorado at Boulder, Hamline University in St. Paul, Minnesota, the Higher Education Consortium of Urban Affairs (HECUA) in Minnesota, Middlesex University in the UK, Pokhara University, Nepal, Can Tho University, Vietnam.
- The University is also a member of a number of international academic associations such as, the American Association of University Administrators, Association of Universities of Asia and the Pacific, the International Association of University Presidents and the International Association of Universities.
- IUB Central Libraries in Dhaka and Chittagong campuses are a gateway to information for students, faculty and staff. The libraries contain over 21, 000 volumes and subscribes to over 100 journals and periodicals. The library has online access to Emerald, Jstor, Oxford University Press Journal and Hinari. All books and journals titles can be accessed through IUB library online databases. The Chittagong campus has an American Corner for information on USA.
- At IUB, the university experience is more than simply an academic exercise. The students participate in various co-curricular activities organized by the Division of Student Activities (DoSA). The student community is also gainfully involved in expressing themselves in various aesthetic forums through numerous clubs such as Literary Society, Debating Club, Science Society, Business Students’ Society, Social & Welfare Society, AIESEC, Green Sphere, Art Club, Cricket Club and Bangla Club.
